April 2021 Newsletter

“Which came first – the Easter Egg or the Easter Bunny?”

Like us, you have probably been enjoying the first signs of spring. There is nothing like waking up to tweeting birds outside the window, seeing the spring flowers starting to peek out and walking outside without that heavy parka! We enjoy seeing more people out for walks or biking. Even Spring Cleaning doesn’t seem so bad after being stuck inside for so long.

We are wishing you and your family a very Happy Spring and Blessed Easter!

GOOD NEWS!!!

Good news for retirement savers! There is more time to make your 2020 IRA contribution. On March 17, 2020, the IRS extended the 2020 federal income tax-filing deadline to May 17, 2021. The extension also extends the deadline until May 17 to make a 2020 prior year contribution to a traditional or Roth IRA. If you have an extension to file your taxes beyond May 17, your IRA contribution deadline is not extended. You must make your IRA contribution by May 17.

Be careful! Any contribution made for the prior year should be clearly marked as such to avoid any confusion. If it not marked for the prior year, the custodian may report it as being for the current year.

IRAs and 401(k)s, RMDs and 1099s. You encounter a whole lot on the way to retirement — some of which is easier to understand than others. No matter where you are on your journey, we’re here to help.

Empowering Women for Retirement
Complimentary Workshop

Women’s journeys to retirement are different than men’s. For instance, women live longer on average than men.¹ Not only does that mean more retirement income may be needed, but it also means women are more likely to face significant long-term healthcare costs. Whether single, married, widowed, or divorced, women have some unique considerations when it comes to planning for retirement.

Women have a choice; they can proactively be involved with financial planning for their future or they can sit back and see what happens and allow the important decisions to be made for them. Our best advice is always, “Don’t depend on others for your financial security.”

Swenson Wealth Management will be hosting some special events for Women. At these events, we will be discussing how to prevent outliving your money in retirement and things your financial advisor should be doing for you. If you and/or a friend are interested in joining women just like you for this entertaining educational program with complimentary wine, hors d’oeuvres and sweets, please, give us a call for more information.
Our first event is coming up on April 20th in Sioux Falls and seating is limited. Call 605-274-8707 for more information.

You've made contributions to your 401(k) every single paycheck for years or even decades. Because of its portability and tax advantages, it may have enabled you to build a sizeable and important nest egg. But be careful — the flexibility of the 401(k) also can make you susceptible to costly mistakes.

We would like to help you avoid common 401(k) rollover mistakes and avoid an IRS early distribution penalty and full taxation on rollovers. Give us a call at 605-274-8707 today to learn more about common 401(k) rollover mistakes and how to ensure your account stays with you.

Gift vs. Inheritance: Consider the Tax Difference

Most people do not pay income tax on assets they inherit, but if they later sell inherited assets such as appreciated securities and real estate, they may owe tax on the capital gains. The capital gain or loss is the difference between the selling price and the asset's basis.

Mozart the Prankster²

Apparently, Mozart had an extreme dislike for the soprano opera singer Adriana Ferrarese del Bene. She had a strange tendency to drop her chin and throw back her head while singing low and high notes respectively, and knowing this, Mozart chose to fill her showpiece aria (“Come scoglio”) with constant harmonic leaps. Presumably he took great pleasure in watching her bob her head “like a chicken”.
