Prayers for Continued Healing

While Covid-19 seems to be the hot topic of the day, Investment Advisor, Mark Kontz, was recently diagnosed with West Nile. We hear about West Nile every year during late summer and fall but often don’t know much about it. According to the South Dakota Department of Health, so far there have been five confirmed cases of the West Nile virus in 2020. Wouldn’t you know, Mark would be one of the lucky five.

West Nile virus is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 80% of infected people have few or no symptoms, around 20% of people develop mild flu like symptoms, and less than 1 % of people develop severe symptoms. About 1 in 150 people who are infected develop a serious illness affecting the central nervous system such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord).

While on vacation in Yellowstone, Mark started showing symptoms. Kathy and Mark returned home where he was hospitalized briefly at Avera and diagnosed with West Nile Meningitis. Mark has been surprised at how much West Nile has knocked him off his feet. He had a very high fever, headache, nausea, tremors, muscle weakness, and blurred vision. Mark is on the road to recovery now but knows recovery might take several weeks or months.

Mark wants to thank his Swenson Wealth Management Team. He is truly grateful for all of your help and continued support. It means a lot! And Mark wants to remind people to take precautions: wear repellant, and cover up. We have learned the hard way that West Nile can be very serious.

Fall Tips to Get You Ready for the Long Winter Ahead from Suzie
  • Winterize your home – a few simple things can save you a lot of money on your heating bills. Caulk any gaps in your windows, cover your windows with bubble wrap. It works as well as or better than those plastic kits you buy and its cheaper. Oh, and change your furnace filter.
  • Winterize your car – Stock your car with emergency supplies like a flashlight, food, water, and a blanket. Replace your wipers and top up the fluid.
  • Start your holiday shopping – you probably have a few days before every store starts piping in Christmas music but that doesn’t mean you can’t start shopping now! When you’re rushed, you spend more money. Take time, make a list!
  • Clean out your closet – time to put the shorts away and replace them with sweaters and jackets. While you do that, take stock. If you summer stuff is looking a little ragged, now is a good time to replace it as stores will be trying to sell off the last of their summer stock.
  • Use up your flex spend dollars – For many plans, any money not spent by December 31 is lost. That’s YOUR money! Make sure you spend it before it’s taken away.

Don't Overlook Legacy Planning

You have to be willing to get a little dark to talk about legacy planning. But the sooner you do, the better off you may be.

The lack of a legacy plan can cause chaos and stress for the people who survive us. This topic was the subject of a recent article from Investopedia, “Estate Planning: 16 Things to Do Before You Die.”¹ The article paints a clear picture of what you should do to make your passing easier on the people you care about. A few of the key points are highlighted here.

Mad Hatter Day²
October 6

A seller of furniture, Theophilus Carter impressed his eccentricity upon Carroll in Oxford. While some reports suggest Carter was unaware of his influence on the Wonderland character, the Mad Hatter. Reverend W. Gordon Baillie had this to say: "All Oxford called him 'the Mad Hatter,' and surely his friends, or enemies, must have chaffed him about it."

Carter also earned himself a different kind of fame—he's rumored to have invented the Alarm Clock Bed, a rather terrifying contraption that woke sleepers by dumping them into a tub of cold water.

Is It Time for a Financial Checkup?

After months of continued economic anxiety thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, and with the uncertainty that could continue for the next several months, it may be the perfect time to conduct a financial checkup.

A thorough examination of your finances may help you weather the current economy and position yourself for when the financial landscape improves. It’s not possible to build a financial strategy that has all the answers, but you can aim to build a strategy that positions you to handle chaos and change
