FINANCIALLY FOCUSED

March 2020 Newsletter

Having you for a client means that I’ve been granted the luck O’ the Irish!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

We’ve made it to March so spring can’t be too far behind. How many more snowstorms do you think we will have to endure in South Dakota? That most famous weather forecasting groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did predict that warmer days are apparently ahead. (Although, we did read, he is only correct about 39% of the time.) We will see . . .

Speaking of seeing . . . if you have driven around the Sioux Falls area recently and looked up, you may see our smiling faces on a few billboards. We love getting the advertising, but we don’t want to be responsible for any major, or even minor accidents, so, don’t look too long. LOL

Some of us in the office are looking forward to attending the Summit League Basketball Tournament at the Denny Sanford Premiere Center this month. Mark and Zach both have Retirement Seminars scheduled for Sioux Falls and Brookings this month. Remember, if you have a friend or relative that would like to learn more about our services, give us a call. We would be happy to invite them to a seminar.

Regardless of whether retirement is right around the corner or years away, we understand that planning for your future is important. Whether you hope to travel, purchase a vacation home, or are beginning to transition wealth to your heirs, our team develops specific strategies to help you achieve your goals. We are here for you!

Plan, preserve and prosper!

Rising Dough and Rising Tensions¹

It may seem a trivial thing, but in 18th-century France, bread became tied to both survival and national identity. According to Cuisine and Culture: A History of Food and People, bread became a key motivating factor in the French revolution. Author Linda Civitello writes, "Bread was considered a public service necessary to keep the people from rioting. Bakers, therefore, were public servants, so the police controlled all aspects of bread production."

Sylvia Neely's A Concise History of the French Revolution states, the average 18th-century worker spent half his daily wage on bread. When grain crops failed two years in a row (1788 and 1789), the price of bread shot up to 88 percent of his wages. Many of the working class blamed the resulting famine and economic instability of the ruling class.
