FINANCIALLY FOCUSED

January 2020 Newsletter

Happy New Year!

Did you set a New Year’s Resolution? Most people find their resolutions quickly broken – diets, exercise classes, etc. can all be hard to stick to. Financial resolutions to improve your economic outlook, however, could be ones that you may actually want to keep. Paying down debt, contributing to your retirement plan, and making a sound budget are all ways to ring in the new year with better financial health. As you start the new year, we encourage you to review your financial and retirement plans. If you have had changes in your personal situation, have questions or concerns, please give us a call. Our services are always available to not only you, but to your family and friends, any time.

Mark and Travis started out 2020 attending an Insurance Summit in Miami, FL to learn about the latest in innovation and industry trends for financial service professionals. It was a wonderful opportunity to visit with the companies/vendors to learn about new products, software, and best practices and visit with others in the industry.

Mark and Kathy Kontz went a few days early (spent time with grandkids) and had the opportunity to visit the Rick Smith Golf Performance Center. Rocco Mediate, a four-time PGA Tour Champion and 2019 winner of the 2019 Sanford International Golf tournament, was helping host the event.

While Mark and Kathy did not come back expert golfers, they did make an observation: Just like in golf, if you master the fundamentals of the swing, you will have a higher chance of success. A financial advisor’s goal is not only to help you master the fundamentals, but guide you toward picking the right club for each situation, to have a better chance of retirement success. When you prepare and prioritize the three L’s – lifetime income, legacy and liquidity – you will significantly improve your chances for a successful retirement.

2019 was a great year with the merger and move into our new office. We are honored and humbled when given the opportunity to serve you. If you haven’t visited us at our new location at 5002 S Broadband Lane, Sioux Falls, we hope to see you in the new year. We are so appreciative of our clients and the wonderful people we work with. Now, we can’t wait to see what surprises 2020 holds for us.

Misconceptions That Could Derail Your Retirement

Bubble Wrap Inventors Have Their Bubbles Burst¹

In 1957, Al Fielding and Marc Chavannes were trying to create a textured wallpaper. To do so, they sealed two shower curtains together so that air bubbles were captured, giving the wallpaper a textured appearance.

But the wallpaper idea didn’t sell too well. Undeterred, they decided to market their invention as greenhouse insulation. Though the material did offer some insulation, this idea didn’t pan out, either.

On October 5, 1959, IBM had announced their new 1401 variable word length computer. Frederick W. Bowers, a marketer at Sealed Air, got the idea that Bubble Wrap could be used as a good packaging material to protect the computer while it was being shipped. He pitched the idea and IBM began purchasing Bubble Wrap to protect their 1401 and other fragile products they sold and shipped.

3 Drawbacks to Early Retirement

Being early can be considered a virtue. Just think of some of the proverbs that we’ve all heard hundreds of times over the years:

“The early bird gets the worm.”

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

There are many situations where being early can be a good thing. But when it comes to retirement, going too early can actually have drawbacks. That’s certainly not the case for everyone, but you’ll want to carefully evaluate your situation before you make any decisions.
